Although LLM maintains a small roster of clients, we keep an eye open for new talent and established authors looking for a more personalized relationship with an agent.
We do not handle young adult or children's books, or short stories and poetry.
LLM receives a couple of thousand submissions a year, both online and by mail. We do not accept queries by telephone. A submission will be reviewed and a response sent if these guidelines are strictly followed:
Fiction: Please send a query letter that describes the book, its genre and length, as well as the first three chapters and a synopsis of the manuscript. Include an author biography and publishing history in the letter or on a separate page. Avoid hyperbole and cliches. Telling us your book will be a runaway bestseller will not affect our decision and actually will most likely be viewed as a negative, given how many times we see this grandiose boast. The manuscript must be double-spaced, and printed on one side of the paper. Generally, a single page query letter alone does not provide enough information for us to act upon.
Nonfiction: Send either a complete proposal or a letter with an outline providing a general mission statement, as well as a complete author biography.
At a minimum, all mail submissions must include a self-addressed, stamped #10 business envelope for a response; additional material will only be returned if an envelope with the required postage is included. Do not substitute postal coupons for U.S. postage when mailing from a foreign country; these will not be returned.
Online: Email queries are accepted, but unsolicited attachments will not be downloaded. Only queries of interest to the agent will receive a response. Follow guidelines above.
In general, expect a response time of up to 16 weeks. Because we do not charge reading fees, no editorial comments or direction can be given on rejected submissions.
